The Artist’s Way

Last year I  wrote in my blog about a book by  Julia Cameron that I was reading.  It was called the Artist’s Way.  One of the things that Julia Cameron promoted was having an ‘Artist’s Date’ every week to help develop your creativity.  My version of my Artist’s Date is to photograph things that I normally don’t photograph.  Whilst I have not been able to keep up with doing this every week, I have managed to do it every month or so. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy it when I do take the time to explore something a little different.   Although I love flowers in my garden and in my home I haven’t been really drawn to photograph them before.  Until now!   None of my lenses were really suitable for this type of macro photography so I borrowed Beth’s 100mm f2.8 macro so I could play around.    Here are a couple of my first attempts.

Camera Love

Well to say I am happy is probably a bit of an under statement:-)     I am not sure how I can show you that I am jumping up and down and clapping my hands.  I am sure I have seen a symbol for that somewhere!   For the past two years I have wanted to buy a Canon 5D Mark II camera.   I made the fatal mistake of using a friend’s 5D once and after I saw how great it was  at shooting in low light compared to my trusty 50D  I was hooked!  At the time there was  only one thing standing between me and a 5D Mark II and that was the price.   Then Canon did me the greatest favour, they bought out the 5D Mark III.   By releasing the new version of the 5D the price of the 5D Mark II came down to a price that I was happy to pay. I did go through the camera envy thing of worrying whether I would regret not buying the Mark III down the track but  I am more than happy with my new baby.

It is all in the eyes

A friend of mine asked me the other day  why most of the images I post on my blog are close up portraits of children’s faces, and asked why I favour these  type of shots.   You know what, I have never even thought about it before.  I didn’t even realise it was the case.   When posting images on my blog I usually just pick a few images from the particular session that I like the best.   The other day during a conversation with Wendy, my photography mentor we were talking about what type of images we like to take and Wendy mentioned to me that she thought my style was ‘classic children’s portraiture’ as she noticed that I like close up shots of children/people’s faces that really feature their eyes.  Again I had never really thought about it.  But now that I think about it,  I do!   I really believe that a person’s eyes are the windows to their soul and that children’s eyes in particular are just so expressive and full of life.   This  photo of Aaron’s eyes below are so mischievous aren’t they?  He was having fun playing around and being cheeky, and  it shows.   Just look at those eyes.

This certainly doesn’t mean that I will only shooting close ups  from here on in, but I do have to admit I do have a bit a soft spot for a good close up and some sparkly eyes.

She really is an Angel

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting an Angel!  Yes her name is Angel and her mum picked the perfect name to suit her personality and her gorgeous face.   What I am noticing at the moment is that when you photograph teenage girls at this age they still enjoy getting their photos taken.  They haven’t developed that self consciousness that some older girls and women feel when they are getting photographed.   These shots of Angel show her true personality and her lovely smile.     I am sure you will agree that she is a gorgeous young lady.

Another fun day with fellow photographers

I know this is starting to become a bit of habit but I love attending Shelton Muller’s workshops.   They are so much fun and I get to shoot real models.  It is great to spend the day with other like minded photographers talking about nothing else but cameras, lenses and photography.    I am starting to think that this is becoming an addiction;-)   I don’t know what I am going to do when I finally complete all of their workshops.   Seriously though I have been learning so much from Shelton and Glynn and they are so much  fun to spend the day with.  Brenda and David our models were great to work with.  I know I have said it before but these models must have the patience of saints to stay happy, relaxed and professional all day when posing for these workshops.

Nothing better than having fun and photography all rolled up together!
