There comes a point in any creative pursuit where you pause and ask yourself, What am I really trying to achieve? For me, I’ve reached that point in my photography. I no longer feel the urge to chase technically perfect images or invest in the latest greatest lenses and gear. Instead my focus is shifting, toward something deeper, creating images that are artistic, meaningful, and reflective of my emotions in the moment.
Photography has always been a way to connect with the world around me, but now, I want to take it a step further. I want my images to tell a story. Sometimes, that story might be about the beauty of a single flower in the soft morning light. Other times, it may capture how I’m feeling in that moment, joyful, contemplative, or even uncertain.
To bring this vision to life, I’m embracing a range of experimental techniques. I’ll be trying out:
- Double exposures to layer and blend imagery for a painterly effect.
- Freelensing to introduce a dreamy, imperfect focus.
- Slow shutter photography to capture movement and create a sense of flow.
- Intentional camera movement (ICM) to paint with light and form.
- And, of course, continuing to play with my beloved Lensbaby lenses, OMNI filters, and crystals to craft unique effects.
I’m excited to explore, experiment, and push myself out of my comfort zone. I won’t lie, some of this will be a challenge! But I believe there’s as much value in sharing the failures as there is in celebrating the successes. This blog will be my creative journal, where I document the ups and downs, and discoveries along the way.
If you are reading this, I hope you’ll come along on this journey with me. Perhaps you’ll find inspiration to try some of these techniques yourself. Or maybe my mistakes will save you a little frustration (and a lot of trial and error!).
At the heart of this journey is the desire to let go of perfection and embrace storytelling through photography. I hope that by focusing less on the technical and more on the artistic, I can create images that resonate, not just with me, but with others too.
Here’s to experimenting, learning, and growing together. Let’s see where this path takes us!
